This illustration was done as a commission assignment for a client who has bought a lot of my original art. He commissioned me to do an original illustration of this monster called "The Flukeman" from the TV show, "X-Files."
First off, let me say, I never was an X-Files fan. Before the guy asked me to do this illo a month ago, I had never even heard of the Flukeman.
It's not that I dislike the show. It's just that I never really got around to watching it. All I know about the show is that the guy with the big nose and the red headed girl are FBI agents who investigate UFO's or something. Oh yes and now I've learned that there is a monster in the sewers called "the Flukeman". That is literally the extent of my knowledge about The X-Files.
Out of curiosity, I looked up some info online and learned that the X-Files was on TV from 1993 to 2002. Which explained why I never became a fan. I have never been a big TV watcher to begin with, but on top of that, during those 9 years when the show was popular, I was in college and preoccupied... Then I got out of college... but moved to California and ended up living in a valley where I got no TV reception unless I got cable... which at that time I really couldn't afford. So I missed out on all TV for a long time and just used my TV set as a receptacle for my DVD player and video games.
If The X-Files had been made ten years earlier or ten years later, I probably would have been a fan, but it fell into a ridiculously turbulent era of my life and just sort of breezed passed me. And now I just don't care enough to go back and figure out what all the excitement was about.
I actually tried to talk my way out of doing this commission. I assured the client that my lack of knowledge in the subject could only result in a failed piece. But the client supplied a lot of invaluable reference and I did the best interpretation I could, from those materials.
In the end, for what little I know about the X-Files, I feel like it turned out fairly well... ...But I suppose all you hardcore X-Files fans out there will have to tell me if I'm right or wrong about that!
Not a big X-Flies fan myself, but still nice work!

Another great one! Flukeman was one of the great early monsters of "X-Files" - truly great monsters being something I always felt was a promised left unfulfilled by the show. Although the show was interesting early on for the UFO and alien abduction conspiracy stories, it was these frequent and (usually) self-contained 'freak of the week' episodes that really made the show, for the most part.
It's a shame that you were at a point in your life that you didn't get a chance to get hooked on the show at some point. Although there was never a huge amount of really bloody, gory horror on the show, it had an atmosphere that was a lot of fun.
I thought the horror angle itself was something that the show never really came through and delivered on to a certain extent. But it was fun for what it was, often clever and fun, and occasionally brilliant.
If you're interested and have the time, they usually show at least one episode a day in the weekday afternoons on Sci Fi Channel. You might check out a few episodes here and there and see what you think.
You did a great job on it. And yeah, he does look like a giant anus. The only thing that could make it better is color.
What can I say? I am an "X-Files" fan. To perfectly honest though, I think the first two seasons really stand out. I mean there were some really excellent episodes those first two seasons. This is not to say that later seasons/episodes were bad, but they didn't have the oomp of the first two seasons. Plus, I had a major crush on Gillian Anderson( still do), who played Scully. With regards to the composition, awesome work once again. You definitely have a style that is distinctive and visually beautiful. Great details and fine poses. I also love the way you drew Scully( sexy and beautiful legs).

Wow, for a guy that draws monsters and ghoulies all of the time I would have thought "The X-files" would have been one of your favourite shows, or at least one you had SOME interest in. You should check out some of the random monster episode dude, they're pretty awesome.
You really sexed up Scully, so that's an automatic "this is awesome!" from me but I really like the way you drew flukeman with all the condescending horizontal lines. I'm very glad you went through with the commission, it's a great piece I think.
Well, knowing there's a huge gaping hole in your knowlege is excellent payback for me after you picked on me for not knowing about Wally Wood ... ... Hey, wait a sec, I know jack about the X-Files too! My revenge is futile! ARGH!!!
