Its incredible mix of genuine freaky scares, genuine good humor, exaggerated comic book style zombies, punk rockers, gory violence, shameless abundance of female nudity, great characters, memorable dialogue, excellent special effects, and true Midwestern American goofiness really, really hit me and charged my imagination into overdrive.
Since then I have seen it many, many times and over the years my love for this movie has only increased. I have often wondered if it might just be my number one favorite horror movie of all time. I hate to say any one horror film is my definite #1 favorite cause there are so many I love so much. But this film is certainly in my top three.
But one thing I am 100% positive about, without any doubt in my mind, is that The Tarman, (the star monster of Return of the Living Dead) is far and away my number one, all time favorite zombie in a movie ever.
So here is my drawing of him in action.
This illustration was done as a commission assignment for a guy who has bought a lot of my original artwork. He asked me to do an original illustration of The Tarman for him. Now that I've done this image I find myself wanting to do more illustrations of different scenes from the film. I will probably have to eventually...
One of my fave films too, when i watched it for the first time on VHS I was expecting just another zombie flick but when they spoke I fell of my settee, literally fell on the floor in shock it was the first talking zombie Id ever seen ...not only that they ran!!!
When that half corpse explain that eating brain stops the pain and another calls for more paramedic ..i was shocked to the core, they reasoned and they had a reason for eating our brain...not people but brains!
All these revelations hocked me for a long long time..in fact I think the mental impact still shows in my art work..
Ab..so..lutly...AMAZING movie and great art, you somehow managed to capture their likeness with just a few marks. Not far how easily you managed that..making me feel jealous.
Awesome thanks for the link. Just wondering, do you only do work from things that have been in film or do you think you could draw something after reading about it in a book? I talk with a lot of authors through Goodreads and HorrorWorld and well I know a few that might be interested in the work you do here. If you can get on to Goodreads.com, try to connect with either Evans or Adam Light. They are brothers that write some fun horror stuff. Also, it would be cool to see what you might come up with after reading something by either J.A.Konrath, Blake Crouch, or Jeff Strand. Their book they all worked on together called Draculas is one I highly recommend and think you style would be perfect for doing a graphic novel of.
Again thanks for the link. I will check it out )
I honestly have to say that Return of the Living Dead is one of my favorite zombie movies. It blends horror and humor very well. I find myself faceplaming and laughing during the "send more paramedics" scene!
btw this is great ^_^
like is that guy at the top of the stairs the one who knocks the zombies head clean off with a baseball bat and tottal exposes the fact that it's some kind of animatronic dummy???
so I practically gave up but upon returning home from college I thought I'd look in an old market centre which had been rebuilt after a fire & LO & BEHOLD! There was "The Return of The Living Dead" for around £4.00 I couldn't believe my eyes & I jumped at the chance & purchased this gem of a comedy/horror film
I noted many contrasts with "ROTLD" & "Day of The Dead" (the 1985 Version by George A. Romero) one of which was in its characters:
*Day of the Dead's characters were rather cold, distant, isolated & rather sociopathic (Captain Rhodes is MOST notorious due to his unhinged mentality with the undead dominating MOST of the ) & their zombies were (for me) rather cliche but a lot of people prefer those types of zombies
*Return of The Living Dead however was a MASSIVE contrast to the former; the characters were ALL likeable (Burt being my personal favourite as even though he's a bit corrupt with keeping his company in business after the 'accidental' release of 245 Trioxin; he soon realises what's happened & tries his damndest to at least keep everyone alive which is a refreshing chance with that ype of character)
& oh yeah! It has lightning bruiser zombies!??!?! Brain Eating, virtually unkillable, highly smart undead.... SEND MORE PARAMEDICS.. & oh yeah! Tarman
and yeah the movie is top
brain muncher R.O.T.L.D has it all!!!Kick-ass artwork man!!
