Fright Night by BryanBaugh Fright Night by BryanBaugh
My tribute to "Fright Night" - one of the best vampire films of the 1980's.

UPDATE: I recently received the following e-mail regarding this illustration:

"Ryan Rotten sent me your renderings of the Fright Night crew...loved it. Wanted you to know. I thought they reflected the good humor that was in the movie.
-Tom"

...The email was from Tom Holland - the director of Fright Night!! This blew me away. Thanks to Ryan Rotten for passing the image on to Tom.

Thank you for paying homage to this delightful film.

Can I make a suggestion? I would love a tribute to "Lost Boys", another nice 80s vampire film, ironic and a bit forgotten. Sherlock Holmes

What do you think? :) (Smile)

I have a rough sketch for a Lost Boys tribute illustration that I did Yeeeeeeears ago, and it's one that I've just never gotten around to finishing. One of these days, I sure hope to. Yeah I am a fan of The Lost Boys. I was exactly the right age for that movie when it came out. I was 15 in the summer of 1987 and that movie was so directly aimed at 1980's teenagers... so I was pretty much the target audience. I saw Lost Boys in the theater during its original release with all my friends and so I always had an affection for it. One of these days I gotta drag out that old sketch and take it to final.

Great idea! I too am a fan of this film (I was a teenager at the time, and I saw it at the cinema ). :D (Big Grin)

I hope to one day be able to see your tribute. I really like your style, I'm sure it will be a great thing. :happybounce:

Really awesome "group shot"! I saw this movie when it first came out, and one of my favorite scenes was where Jerry Dandridge enters the Brewster home through an upstairs window, whistling a tune. I just lost it, and a guy behind me asked what was so funny, and I said "he's whistling 'Strangers in the Night'!" I thought this was just classic comic relief.

Haha, awesome! Yeah I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out, too. I was in the 8th grade (if I remember right), and my dad took me. My dad was great about taking me to all the cool monster movies when I was a kid.

Jerry Dandrich's human/zombie/ghoul (whatever he was) housemate melted to a green skeleton after being shot in the head and stabbed with a wooden stake.

Ahhhh, what a classic. It's pretty awesome to get a compliment from the original director. I am still waiting for them to re-release Fright Night and Part 2 on a new dvd. I know the first one came out on blu-ray but it's now really rare and I never get my horror on blu ray.

You never get horror movies on BluRay?

:icondlpeattie:

Unless under certain rare conditions, nope. When it comes to mainly comedies, kung fu, classic, and horror I always get them on a standard dvd. Because I feel like it's not really needed, I feel like I should save Blue-ray for only certain movies that are spectacular to watch or has great looking visuals. For all the genres I listed above, I do enjoy it when they still have a bit of an aged look, (for the old ones anyways.) and I can still enjoy them without having the picture be crystal clear. Besides, it's cheaper. Heh

You don't regard Horror as a genre that is "spectacular to watch or has great looking visuals"??

:icondlpeattie:
dlpeattie Featured By Owner Mar 22, 2012
Ahhhh, sorry I'll be more specific. The movies I get on blu-ray are usually summer blockbusters or top quality animated features. I'm not really saying that (good) horror films are low in quality or can't have high production values, I have collected alot of the classics. Sorry if I sounded a little offensive in my last comment. I just like to have a little grain on my horror films when I buy them.

Sure no problem. Say, since Hollywood is wasting their time remaking all the good horror films, wouldn't it be great if something like Dracula vs Frankenstein was remade?

Fantastic! After over 15 years, I still haven't figured out WTH Billy was supposed to be.

Have you seen the musical, yet? :XD:

Yeah I was always confused about that too. But I kinda liked how they left it ambiguous, letting you come to your own understanding of who and what Billy was. The movie suggests Billy was the vampire's "familiar", meaning "a protector who guards the vampire's coffin while he sleeps". The fact that he survived being shot with bullets, then melted when stabbed with a wooden stake, might suggest that he was a Ghoul - in the monster-lore sense of the word - a creature that is sort of a zombie but looks like a normal human until you kill it, at which point it rots into the dead body it actually is.

Have I seen the musical??? Are you joking???

Hadn't thought of ghoul as a possibility before; usually just picture them as grave-robbing flesh-eaters.

No, I'm not joking, but the guys who made it were. These guys are hilarious.

Heh, these are superb caricatures, good job!! And even creepy carpenter Billy gets a look-in, he's so often overlooked as part of the supporting cast.
Kudos on your email from Tom. Much deserved high praise indeed. ^^

I watched this earlier this year with my parents, who of course have already seen it, and I really enjoyed it. I kind of don't want to see the remake because the original was so good.

I don't blame you. I have not seen the "Fright Night" remake - but the trailer gave me the impression that it totally missed the point of what made the original "Fright Night" so great. The original "Fright Night" was a tribute to the old fashioned style of horror movie. The trailer for the remake looked like a Marilyn Manson video or something. That's not "Fright Night" to me.

The Fright Night remake is quite good and does make fun of today's vampire trend including Twilight

Exactly. As much as I support vampires and vampire movies I still did not think that it looked like an awesome remake. All it did was make me want to watch the original. I liked the kind of hokey feel the original had. It was cool that it was an old fashioned style.

Based on the trailer, it looks pretty obvious to me, that it's gonna be one of the worst horror remakes of all time.
