Day the Earth Stood Still by BryanBaugh Day the Earth Stood Still by BryanBaugh
This illustration is a tribute to the movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still” – and I’m talking about the original, black-and-white, 1951 version directed by Robert Wise and starring Michael Rennie as Klaatu.

I never saw the 2008 Keanu Reeves re-make. So I can’t comment on that.

In his book “Danse Macabre” Stephen King described “The Day the Earth Stood Still” as “One of a select few… The REAL science fiction movies”… and I think that is a pretty good summation. It’s one of the all-time classics, with a big, awesome robot (named Gort) who can shoot a death-ray out of his cyclopean eye and disintegrate anything… and yet this movie still manages to be really deeply meaningful, with a profound anti-war message.

Oh yeah, and of course, this movie is also famous for something else. To stop Gort from going on a rampage of destruction and disintegrating every human being in sight, you must walk right up to him and say three alien words: “Klaatu Barada Nikto”.

And if you are as big of a movie trivia nerd as I am, you probably already know that those alien code words have been re-used in various other movies to pay homage to this classic film. The most famous examples being: “Return of the Jedi” (where Jabba the Hutt’s three “skiff guards” were named “Klaatu, Barada, and Nikto”… and “Army of Darkness” in which Ash must say those same three magic words to safely claim The Book of the Dead from a cemetery… but he humorously forgets the words and says, “Klaatu, Barada, Necktie” instead)…

…I wonder how many movie nerds who are aware of the in-jokes have bothered to see the original film that inspired them?

Check out “The Day the Earth Stood Still” next time you get the chance. If you like smart science fiction movies that leave a lasting impression and make you think – while still delivering the fun stuff – UFO’s, big robots, death rays… this one is really excellent.

(...Oh - I almost forgot to mention - When I was working on this illustration, I got a weird inspiration to draw the background army guys in the same poses as the famous Marxx plastic toy soldiers from the 1950's... The machine-gunner, the guy with the walkie-talkie, the guy with the binoculars, etc. I also tried to include the guy throwing the grenade but ran out of room. Haha. Oh well, I got most of them in there. Don't know why I did that, it just seemed fun.)

I've watched both versions. I did enjoy both of them because they had good messages, but i did enjoy the ending of the 1951 version better. The 2008 version just ended abruptly. Plus, there were times in the 2008 version that felt kind of bland and joyless.

Anyways, this is a good drawing for a good movie!

Another true and timeless classic. You could transplant that script and dialogue word for word and the movie would still stand up against just about anything out there. It really hasn't aged a bit. Thanks for capturing the essence of Gort, who remains pretty damned frightening.

One small point,,,your helicoptors are not 1951 vintage. However, I totally agree with your description and comments.

I've actually had this in my Netflix queue for months, and it just arrived today, so I'll pop it in and watch it again for the first time in years. It certainly is a classic and one of my favorite memories from the "Science Fiction Theater days" of my youth. Your illustration is a great and fun tribute--it's like the Heavy Metal version of The Iron Giant...

Regarding the 2008 remake, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. The revisions made in it are similar to the whole "Descent" = modern "The Mole Men" remake idea. Some ideas of the original are minimized or replaced by other ideas, but some of the elements are there strongly and just revamped for a modern audience with new sci-fi options. GORT is still pretty cool.

In any case, this is a lot of fun; I enjoy your movie tributes quite a bit, and this one is no exception. =)

Great illustration! I saw the remake before the original, but the remake just wasn't the same, I don't think they could've captured the same feel anyway.

One of my all-time favorite sci-fi flicks. Gort's definitely in my top five movie robots (behind my icon, of course!). Another great piece! The soldier corpses definitely give it an eerie apocalyptic vibe.
